Categories of driving licenses in Spain

 

  • AM : two- or three-wheeled mopeds and light quadricycles. The minimum age to obtain it will be fifteen years old.
  • A1 : motorcycles with a maximum displacement of 125 cm³ and a maximum power of 11 kW (just under 15 hp). The minimum age to obtain it will be sixteen years old.
  • A2 : motorcycles with a maximum power of 35 kW (just under 47 hp). The minimum age to obtain it will be eighteen years old.
  • A : motorcycles and motor tricycles. The minimum age to obtain it will be twenty years old, twenty-one in the case of tricycles.

  • B : authorized to drive the following vehicles:
    • Cars whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 3,500 kg that are designed and built to transport no more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver. Vehicles without a trailer powered by alternative fuels intended for the transport of goods with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg are authorized to drive in national territory with a license older than two years, provided that the mass exceeding 3,500 kg comes exclusively from the excess mass of the propulsion system with respect to the propulsion system of a vehicle of the same dimensions that is equipped with a conventional internal combustion engine with spark ignition or compression ignition, and provided that the load capacity is not increased with respect to the same vehicle.
    • Sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class B permit and a trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg, provided that the maximum authorized mass of the set does not exceed 4,250 kg, without prejudice to the provisions that the type approval regulations establish for these vehicles
    • Motor tricycles and quadricycles
    • The minimum age to obtain it will be eighteen years old.
  • B + E:  sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class B permit and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 3500 kg. The minimum age to obtain it will be eighteen years old.
  • C1 : automobiles other than those authorized to drive by the D1 or D class permit, whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 3,500 kg and does not exceed 7,500 kg. The minimum age to obtain it will be eighteen years old.
  • C1 + E : authorized to drive the following vehicles:
    • Sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class C1 permit and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg, provided that the maximum authorized mass of the set thus formed does not exceed 12,000 kg.
    • Sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class B permit and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 3,500 kg, provided that the maximum authorized mass of the set does not exceed 12,000 kg, without prejudice to the provisions established by the type approval standards for these vehicles
    • The minimum age to obtain it will be eighteen years old.
  • C : automobiles other than those authorized to drive by the D1 or D class permit, whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 3500 kg. The minimum age to obtain it will be twenty-one years of age. It can also be obtained at the age of 18 as long as he is the holder of the certificate of professional aptitude (CAP) in the ordinary initial qualification modality.
  • C + E : sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class C permit and a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg. The minimum age to obtain it will be twenty-one years of age. It can also be obtained at the age of 18 as long as he is the holder of the certificate of professional aptitude (CAP) in the ordinary initial qualification modality.
  • D1 : automobiles designed and built to transport no more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and whose maximum length does not exceed 8 meters. The minimum age to obtain it will be twenty-one years of age. It can also be obtained when they are 18 years old as long as they are the holder of the professional aptitude certificate (CAP) in the ordinary initial qualification modality, but they can only drive these vehicles within the national territory until the permit holder is 21 years old.
  • D1 + E : sets of coupled vehicles made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by a class D1 permit and a trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg. The minimum age to obtain it will be twenty-one years of age. It can also be obtained when they are 18 years old as long as they are the holder of the professional aptitude certificate (CAP) in the ordinary initial qualification modality, but they can only drive these vehicles within the national territory until the permit holder is 21 years old.
